SPI or Carb and what modifications? Empty SPI or Carb and what modifications?

Post  understeer into wood Mon Apr 19, 2010 4:14 pm

At the moment I have a 1275 single carb. I want to get more from my engine but also be reliable as an every day car. Do I stay with single carb or swap to a double? Or should I pack it in and go SPI?

Then there is the ignition system to think about... ECU or Dizzy???
And what stage kit would best suit me????

*getting a headache just thinking about it*

I'm not all that great with my mechanics and I have only had my mini since November, so some input from you more seasoned mini owners would be greatly appriciated.

couldn't you put a bigger head on the car that would help more
    with a electronic dizzy

i think the conversion from carb to spi is difficult and so is the double carb as you have to split the accelerator and choke cables

It has been suggested that i use a stage 3 head, 1.5 rocker and a 1.75 single carb.
As for the ignition, I think you are right with the electronic dizzy.

However I'm not exactly work shy and i know a few people who could help me to fit a double carb, but what would i gain from it?

well the twin carb provides a smoother throttle but not really much extra power but can be hell to set up if you're only buying one because if one is slightly worn down it'll be hard to set the other one correct

so the stage 3 head/rockers/1.75 carb/sports coil and a new manifold/exhaust would be good

I already have a peaco twin centre exit fitted but I would like a large bore, manifold and tail pipe just to eliminate all that back pressure. So you recon a decent 1.75 single carb would do the job? I also want a K&N air filter but I would like to rig a cold air feed or induction kit, what would be the best way to do this?

i'm not sure i only have a stage 1 kit
k&n air filter 1.5 carb(i think) mainflow manifold and rc40

is it already a water cooled manifold?

def don't go spi you will make your car slower

judging by the age of your car don't you already have electronic ignition

ecu's are good for the ignition but it depends how far you want to go

but i say stage 1 with a 1.75 carb or twins

stage 3+ head and 1.5 rockers would be a good start

or you could just go balls out and supercharge it Very Happy

SUPER CHARGE!!!!!! now thats just a silly suggestion Razz . I want reliability not an engine that dismantles itself every time i step on the accelerator.

What steve said... Modify your existing head by port polish, valve grinding and skimming it etc.. OR spend a wadge on a stage 3 head with similar effects.. and drop on some 1.5 rockers with a better manifold youll get quite a noticeable difference for very little effort. little things like a half decent air filter, new leads, contacts and spark plugs all add up if you really want to do so! ....and getting it rolling road tuned will let you get the most out of it too Laughing

yeah staged head thats all up to you and how far our wallet will allow and what you intend to do in the future.i recomend either vmax or med or swifty great service and friendly people with great aftercare.

as for twins they will add a bit more power but a lot more torque and grunt lower down.1.75 carbs
are pretty good also all have to be properly setup to gain most out of it.

manifold i think we looked and you had a lcb already

as for ignition again its your pocket that defines your car at the end of the day theres limitless options.

    1.5 rockers always good

then after that your looking at cams and internals.and start going really deep.

    massive importance 2 thing

1.think i said before you have thre words you can only pick two and the third is resulting POWER,CHEAP,RELIABLE

    cheap power is never reliable
    reliable power is never cheap
cheap and reliable is never powerful

also please upgrade your brake and stopping handling if doing the engine.all that power need to be stoppped and controlled
